Annual Appeal

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
2 Corinthians 9:6, 7

This is the time of year when our mailboxes begin to overflow with requests for donations. I'm involved in helping with the Annual Appeal for the school where I work part-time. Having been on the sending end of these fundraising letters for a few years now has given me an appreciation for how important year-end giving is to nonprofit organizations. What I like best, of course, is when the gifts begin to come in (reaping!) after the hard work of putting the mailing together (sowing!)

Who's most likely to give? Recently, ABC's 20/20 ran a piece by John Stossel about "Who Gives and Who Doesn't?" This stood out to me: "... the single biggest predictor of whether someone will be charitable is their religious participation.... Religious people are more likely to give to charity, and when they give, they give more money: four times as much." Stossel quotes Arthur Brooks, author of Who Really Cares, who says "Actually, the truth is that they're giving to more than their churches.... The religious Americans are more likely to give to every kind of cause and charity, including explicitly non-religious charities."

Isn't that cool?
